We're scorching our planet. I heard it, I believe it, and I'm trying to stop it. But I can't help but feel alone in my battle for the future of our home. But why does it seem like no one else is trying to stop this obvious and eminent disaster?

The disbelieving

There is a significant percentage of Americans that don't believe in anthropogenic (human caused) global warming, anywhere from 25-35% depending on the poll. Actually, it took me a while to believe in climate change (I come from a strong conservative background; of course, this was many years ago). Luckily, of course, there's no shortage of evidence to support the accusation.

An unbelieving friend recently told me that the majority of meteorologists don't believe in humans’ involvement. Actually, 64% of meteorologists believe that humans are responsible for the warming planet but this is much lower than the 97% of climatologists that agree to humans’ involvement. The obvious explanation is that meteorologists study weather and climatologists study climate, with the most noticeable change in the latter. More generally, 90% of scientists are convinced that the planet is warming and 82% that humans are the cause of this. That's a pretty conclusive percentage.[1]

The status qou

Actually, the number of Americans that believe that global warming is a serious threat is still fairly high (58%) and exactly one third (33%) see it as a very serious threat.[2] But what are these people doing?

Most of my friends believe in climate change but I don’t see any significant change in their lifestyle or plans for the future. I don’t know if they envision this problem as inevitable or daunting, or if they’re just too lazy and short-sided. Maybe they just don’t realize that they’re part of the problem.

The lack of focus on climate change can also be seen in the political world and in recent years it has continuously become less of a priority. Even President Obama made no mention of climate change during his State of the Union address.

The answer

Though the planet is heating up, the politics surrounding this issue have frozen. But don’t become too disheartened, there is still a solution, and it involves you. I won’t tell you it’s quick or easy, most change isn’t. However, you’re part of the problem so the only way to fix it is to be part of the solution.

So what do you have to do? Change. Change your light bulbs. Change your transportation. Change your diet. Change the source of your energy. Change your house your family and your friends. Change your school. Then your city. That’s how we’ll change the world.

I’ve decided to do my part and I ask you to do your part too. I have chosen two things to do my part this year. First, I have decided to write a weekly blog on Lead Your Revolution to describe what I’m doing in my life to reduce my damage to the planet. Second, I have a chosen a goal of recruiting 100 people every month to Lead Your Revolution to grow this movement. What will you do this year to make lasting change in this world?

This is no small task and it requires a revolution. And you can lead it. Lead Your Revolution.
