Santa Fe New Mexican's local news brief: "Climate ride aims to raise awareness
A local effort to promote awareness of climate change also promises to let participants get some exercise. The second Climate Ride takes place Sunday, sponsored by the nonprofit Climate Change Leadership Institute.
Riders can choose a 60-, 40- or 20-mile loop ride that begins and ends at the Tesuque Village Market. Children can register for a 5-mile guided ride.
Proceeds from the $65-a-person event support the institute's seed grants, youth internships and action projects. This year's climate challenge is "Cool the Climate." People can register for the ride or join the challenge at www.takeresponsibility.us.
This year the institute will honor (at the Tesuque Market's after-ride luncheon) the Jemez Pueblo, adobe builder Mike Lopach, and algae biomass expert and Santa Fe Community College teacher Charles Bensinger (and on Nov. 9 at the Lensic Performing Arts Center) environmental activist Bill McKibben with students from St. John's College, for their efforts in sustainability.
